walk within daily life

For this exercise I would raise my left when interacting with anything. Whether this was a conversation, or opening i would raise my left hand above my head. I did this at varying speeds throughout the day. When doing it the presences of my friends i do not think they really thought to much of it. they see me do odd things around our house everyday and probably just took it as something like that. But when interacting with people i did not know or even people I did not know as well I got some strange looks when doing this. I wen t to the grocery and did it every time i picked something up and interacted with anything. Not to many people ever asked me about why I was doing these things either. I think 3-4 people even asked me why i was doing it all day,  That was one thing i thought I would get more of when doing this. My arm did get very tired throughout the course of the day. I found this to be a fun and interesting performance but i did not get the reactions I thought.  I guess people are more used to seeing oddities today are they are just more prepared to ignore them.

  1. I think randomly raising your left arm was very interesting. I would have also thought that you would have seen more reactions out of people. I also think that people have in some way become numb to things people do in public and have just made the choice to ignore it and mind their own business. Even though they didn’t say anything I would be curious to know what they were thinking when you were doing it. I think this was a good choice for doing something out of the norm.

  2. Hello!
I think raising your left hand above your head throughout the day was a great idea for this walking activity. Choosing such a simple action to disrupt how you move through space really does shift your experience. One variation you could try is raising either your right or left hand based on certain situations, like raising your right hand when interacting with people and your left when engaging with objects or everyday tasks. Even though not many people asked what you were doing, it’s interesting that you still felt a change in how you interacted with the world around you. This is a really creative idea!

  3. Hi,
This honestly sounds so fun. I bet that people walking around thought you had a tick. A tick is basically an involuntary movement that some people don't notice are doing. I believe that this was definitely seen as strange, but no one seemed to ask, or really pay much attention. Overall this is super fun, I think if you did this once again, you should write something on your hand in sharpie. Maybe something like "WAVE HI", or "SMILE", maybe possibly just a smiley face. I'd love to see some video if you could! Just so I could visually see what you did.

  4. This was such a fun and curious experiment to read about! I love how something as simple as raising your hand could create such a shift in social interaction. It’s interesting that your friends didn’t react much, while strangers gave more confused looks, but still, not as many asked as you expected. That really says something about how people either ignore the unusual or are just used to odd behavior these days. Also, I hadn’t even thought about how physically tiring it would be, that adds a whole new level to the performance.
