Final project proposal

1. Public places are great for a lot of things, shopping, walking Etc. So why not frolic in these  places as well. These commercial areas have norms and such but frolicking does nothing but bring people happiness and remind them to smile. So i will be going to public commercial areas and frolicking breaking some of these norms and trying to get people to smile or even join in.

2.  For my final project I will go to the most commercial spaces I can find in where I am at and will dance and frolic around the spaces to.  It is simple yet I think it is an effective manner to inject some life and something out of the ordinary to these places. often being places that take them selves to seriously I feel that this breaks the norms of these places.

4. my plan for this project is to go to spaces that are populated and used for commercial uses and frolic around and dance. there is social norms for these places and breaking them in a fun playful manner is what I am going to do for this project. I plan on doing this to reclaim play and imagination especially in areas where people are going to consume.  One of the ideas shared from The Beach Beneath the Street is that capitalism has suppressed play and creativity so going to a place where lots of sales and consumerism is happening and doing a performance like this is a way to express this I feel.  Frolicking is a good symbol for play and creativity I think because you frolic when happy and it is something that is extremely unserious and is goofy to. Whenever people see you frolic they cant help but smile. By doing this performance I hope to bring some more life and joy to the areas I choose to go and hopefully I have some people join in. I will video myself in these various location completing the action. I will go to the international market place, ala moana mall and downtown Waikiki to complete this. All locations with lots of tourist and lots of stores and corporate stores trying to make money on all the people passing by. I want this performance to be light hearted and fun feeling.

6.  for this project I will film using my phone and put the video together using adobe premiere. I will not have to spend any money as i already have the items and the rest of the project is me physically doing something.  I do not think it will take me to long to document my performance either. I think that realistically it will take me 3-4 days to complete just because of traveling form place to place without a car can be difficult to get the footage and making sure im in each spot when large quantities of people are around.

  1. This is such a fun idea! I love this performance idea of using frolicking to interrupt how serious commercial spaces can be. Not only are you using performance as a tool to do this, but you're also directly relating to Wark's "The Beach Beneath the Street," where it's described that everyday life under capitalism becomes boring and controlled and that we need to find ways to bring play and spontaneity back into public space! One idea you could enact to ramp up this idea is to dress in a "costume" or add a sign to invite others to join. I can't wait to see your final video!

  3. I absolutely love the playful energy of your project! Frolicking in commercial spaces is such a joyful and bold way to challenge the seriousness and routine of these environments. Your connection to The Beach Beneath the Street and reclaiming play in spaces shaped by consumerism adds a thoughtful and meaningful layer to the performance. I also think it’s great that you're aiming to spark spontaneous joy, sometimes all it takes is seeing someone being goofy and free to remind us how fun life can be. Can’t wait to see how people react and if anyone joins in!
