Final project
For my project i wanted to do a public performance so I decided to go to public commercial places and frolic. I choose frolic because it is a extremely light hearted and funny activity. I went to places that sold lots of goods mostly places that sold material items. I wanted to go somewhere that capitalism is apparent and Waikiki is definitely a place that capitalizes on tourists. The whole area is built to make money off the tourists. I wanted to do it in these areas because one of the ideas presented is that capitalism steals creativity and play from people. so doing something light hearted and goofy in a place like this to try and reclaim it was the plan. I had some issues filming with security which made it difficult to get extended footage of the action and was ask to leave most locations. I was able to get enough footage i think though. I feel that my actions display effectively what i am trying to communicate and the fact i was getting. asked to leave these places kind of shows how these areas might be taking our creativity and play away from us. These settings expect certain norms and breaking them is a way to rebel against and show that we can still be individualistic as people. I feel however people enjoy more to blend into the crowd and not stand out like an a guy frolicking around malls and shopping centers. I feel when doing this to people choose to ignore me and not address what was happening in front of them. I know it is not something that is supper out of the ordinary but is is also something that you do not regularly see and I felt I would of got more of a reaction. While I did not get to frolic around these places as much as I wanted because of security I felt I would of gotten more of a reaction. I feel people today like to avoid human interaction and not talk unless it is through a screen. Something technology definitely capitalizes on which furthers the point on how capitalism robs us of our play and creative human aspects and even takes some of our other human aspects from us simply to make money. I feel my project demonstrates this in a manner but I did not get there quite all there but I think it is still effective. Overall I wanted to go to places that have been so commercialized and just do something kind of strange and funny to try and show that at the end of the day the only reason these places can take our play and creativity or human aspect away from us is because we allow them to.
Path walked -
Hi Elijah! I really love this concept you did, and how, because you would get kicked out, it is kind of a way to show people taking away people's creativity. I feel like I see this a lot in different public places, with people getting kicked out of stores or getting in trouble for painting on something like a wall. I would love to see more exploration on this and see how many stores you get kicked from or if there are some other places that are not as public that you get kicked from because you are frolicking.
ReplyDeleteHi Elijah, I love both the concept and the contrast you made in your project by frolicking in such commercialized spaces, it's a really fun and clever idea! I understand how getting footage must be tough with security around, but I think showing even more of those moments, like when someone tries to kick you out, could actually strengthen your message. Including that tension could highlight how resistant these spaces are to unexpected, playful behavior and can really drive your point home. The concept is creative and strong, good job!
ReplyDeleteHi! This is such a fun project idea! This youtube video you made was so funny to watch. When you said frolicking I was thinking like slow motion running like in the movie. AND you exceeded my expectations, I'd love to see you in the middle of a hustle bustle city doing this. Anyways, such a smart idea to act a fool in public to see reactions to creativity!
