Social Territory

A scene that I am a part of is the skateboard community. While I do not skate as much as I used to I still go out around campus and find some spots to ride every now and then. Across campus there is many great places to skate and many of those places have been skate stopped and capped. Despite this there is still a lot of great places to ride around campus.

Henry Koffler building - Right out side of this building it is almost like a little skate park. There is plenty of ledges, stairs and flat ground to skate. There is almost always a people skating here when it is not to hot as well.

Another spot that used to be good to skate on campus was the ground in front of Old Main. It is the best flat ground on campus. Except now it heavily patrolled and the curbs have been capped. This spot is still great flat ground spot and used to have skaters there all the time getting some tricks in between classes.  you can see how they have capped the curbs but this does not take away from the main point of this spot however.
Example of the ground and how the curb has been capped

This place would definitely work better if the caps on the curbs were not there but being a flat ground spot it really is not the biggest deal.

Leaving Old Main and heading towards the Mathematics building there is a fun banked hill area that is fun to do some surfy things at and try to air out of. this is always a fun spot to try some different tricks out or just try to get some surfy turns in.
This spot works really well for what it is and there is always fun to be had here.

leaving there and going even further down the path just across the street from the Arizona and Sonora Dorms there is another great spot with multiple aspects. There is two really fun manny pads and a great area for flat ground skating as well. this spot is also well shaded as it is covered.
this is a personal favorite spot of mine and there is normally other people sessioning the spot as well it is a great place for progression and getting what you already have on lock.

  1. I love how you described the Henry Koffler spot. Do you usually skate alone or with others? How does the community connect?

  2. I can see from this post and another one you did, you truly enjoy the art of skateboarding! While I enjoy getting to see the scene you are the most a part of, I would have loved to see another side to you that is equally important.

  3. As someone who isn't a skater, it is always interesting to see structures from the perspective of a skater, like I could never really see structures like stairs or ledges and think that's something to interact with differently than it's original intent. Great work capturing the locations!

  4. I love how you are looking at architecture from this specific viewpoint as a way of mapping the skating spots on campus. Within the skate community, these are known spots and structures but most people would not notice these things- such as caps on a curb. Things like steps, flat ground, and curbs are apart of this visual skating language that you have pointed out. Really cool concept!
